PDF Readers

I've stopped using Acrobat Reader for quite a while because it is bloated and slow. My favorite is Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows. Foxit has also released Reader 3.0 for Windows with more features that I didn't need. After installation, you can copy the files in your installed directory to a USB flash drive and run Foxit Reader on any computer. You can't disable auto update but your third party firewall should prevent it. Also, for privacy reason, you can remove the list of files opened using CCleaner.

Another alternative is Sumatra PDF which does not require any installation. You can disable auto update but you can't remove the list of files opened. During testing, I encountered "Couldn't render the page" error while opening a pdf file as shown.

Viewing PDF Files in Windows 7 Beta

You can use Adobe Acrobat Reader to view PDF files. Another alternative is Foxit Reader. This software is faster and occupies less disk space.

After installation on a computer, you can just copy the installation directory to a USB flash drive and it will work on any computer.

Creating PDF Files in Windows 7 Beta

Although Windows 7 Beta comes with Microsoft XPS Document Writer, pdf is the de facto standard. By using pdf printer driver, it not only saves paper but works in any application. I tested the following software which supports Windows Vista:
  1. novaPDF Lite Desktop 6
  2. PrimoPDF 4.1
  3. CutePDF Writer 2.71
  4. Foxit PDF Creator
Only CutePDF Writer 2.71 works in Windows 7 Beta. But, you need to install the PS2PDF converter as well.
