Antivirus or Antispyware Software

Do you really need to purchase antivirus or antispyware software? I prefer a third party firewall software installed on a computer with Windows 7 running as a standard user. You won't get all the security problems related to running as an administrator.

But, if you're a home user and concerned about security, you can install those reputable free versions of antivirus or antispyware software.

Adobe Flash Player

Do you really need Adobe flash player? My frequently visited websites listed below do not require it.
  1. Engadget
  2. Crave
  3. PC World
  4. Hot Hardware
  5. Liliputing
I don't miss the flash videos or advertisements and I feel more secure without worrying about patching it for security vulnerabilities.

Differences Between Atheros & Broadcom Chipsets

Acer Aspire One AOA110 Model ZG5 uses Atheros AR5007EG chipset whereas Acer Aspire One D250 Model KAV60 uses Broadcom 802.11g chipset. I also have Linksys wireless N network adapter WPC300N with Broadcom chipset.

I noticed the following differences:
  1. If you turn off the wireless switch on Acer Aspire One AOA110, it will remain turn off even after shutdown or reboot until you turn it on. But, if you turn off the wireless switch on Acer Aspire One D250, it will turn on itself after shutdown or reboot.
  2. If you boot up Acer Aspire One AOA110 without first turning on your wireless router, the wireless connection will function continuously after getting connected. But, if you boot up Acer Aspire One D250 without first turning on your wireless router, the wireless connection will function intermittently after getting connected until you shutdown or reboot. This behavior is also evident in Linksys WPC300N with Linksys WRT150 router.
Thus, I prefer Atheros chipset than Broadcom chipset.

Problems with Blogger

Ever since after the Taiwan typhoon which caused the underseas internet cable damage, I'm unable to see the toolbar when posting. Upon checking online, I'm not the only person having this issue. Pressing Ctrl-F5 will bring back the toolbar but when you try to add image, it won't appear in my post.

After investigation, I found the problem lies with the DNS servers of my ISP. Since they can't resolve the problem, I decided to switch to openDNS. You can use the following DNS server addresses:
  1. Primary/Preferred DNS server : 208.67.222.222
  2. Secondary/Alternate DNS server : 208.67.220.220
If you're using a 3G USB modem to connect to Internet, you can't change your DNS server addresses since they're assigned automatically. The solution is to use a 3G wireless router. You can either assign the DNS server addresses in the router configuration or in the network configuration of your PC.

Aztech 3G Mobile Broadband Wireless Router

Aztech has launched its 3G mobile broadband wireless router HW550-3G at a very affordable price of $99 with 2 years warranty. This beats the pricings of other 3G wireless routers.

In addition, it is a 4 port wireless N (300Mbps) router with print and storage servers function. Even though it supports WPA2, it is not Wi-Fi certified. I've tested it working with Huawei E169 and E220 USB modems. You can even use a USB hub to connect a printer and 3G modem together.

You can change password, upgrade firmware and it has the important features and good to have features. But, MAC address filtering is only partially configurable with the latest firmware 201.106.1-032.

LG LCD TV Monitor

I bought this 22" LG LCD TV monitor M228WA for 2 purposes - connecting PC and watching TV. It has a resolution of 1680 x 1050, brightness 300 cd/sq m and contrast ratio 1000:1. There is also D-Sub (VGA) and DVI connections to a PC. For TV, you can connect via antenna, RCA, S-Video or component cable. It costs $399 with 3 years on-site warranty.

Since my PC has dual display inputs - VGA/HDMI or VGA/DVI, I can connect to 2 monitors, one via VGA and the other via DVI using this monitor. I tested connecting via HDMI to another LCD TV and it is blurred unlike VGA or DVI.

3G Wireless Router

Having a mobile broadband 3G USB modem is good enough for one user. But if you need to share with other users, then you'll need a 3G wireless router which is more expensive than a wireless router. D-Link DIR-451 costs $299 whereas Zyxel NBG412W3G costs $229.

Zyxel 3G router is Wi-Fi b/g certified with WPA2 and is compatible with Huawei E169, E170, E220 & E270 USB modems. You can disable remote management, change password, upgrade firmware and it has the important features and good to have features. It comes with 3 years warranty and you can even check your warranty period online.

I just found out that Asus Express Gate 1.4.6.9 is available to download for my budget test PC with Asus M2N68-VM motherboard. The version which comes with the motherboard's DVD is 1.3.3.1. Since there is no mention of the changes and I can't find the differences online, the only way to find out is to install this new version.

The following applications is available in Asus Express Gate 1.3.3.1:
  1. Web Browser 0.9.2.12
  2. Skype version 2.0.0.72 (supports video)

Wired Print Server for Wireless Printing

In my previous post, I mentioned that you don't need a wireless print server for wireless printing. I tested this wired print server TP-Link TL-PS110U ($78) for USB printer. Even wireless users can print to the same printer when the wired print server is connected to a wireless router.

TP-Link also has other models - TL-PS110P for parallel printer, TL-PS210U for USB multi-function printer (print, scan, fax, copy) and TL-PS310U for USB multi-function printer with storage server. If you still need a wireless print server, TP-Link also has TL-WPS510U.

Mozilla Firefox 3.5

I installed this latest version and the browser crashed many times for no reason. In terms of security, there is no improvement except for private browsing mode. But, you can also manually configure the previous version Mozilla Firefox 3.0.11 to do the same thing.

I'll advise not using this new version until Mozilla has fixed its bugs.

Cannot Do Clean Install With Windows 7 Upgrade Media

As shown from Windows 7 Upgrade Option website, you're not entitled to upgrade from an OEM version of Windows Vista to Windows 7 from your local system builders.

Also contrary to report, you won't be able to do a clean install with Windows 7 upgrade media from a retail full/upgrade version of Windows Vista.

Buffalo MediaStation Portable DVD Drive

Since I've 2 netbooks - Acer Aspire One AOA110 and Lenovo IdeaPad S10, I wanted to buy a USB bus powered portable DVD drive without the need for an external power adapter. I tested three such drives - LG GP08 ($133), Panasonic UJ-880A ($125) and Buffalo DVM-P8U2/BW-AP ($80).

LG GP08 was not detected in the BIOS of both AOA110 and S10 so I can't boot from CD/DVD to install any OS but can be used within Windows. Both Panasonic UJ-880A and Buffalo DVM-P8U2 were detected in the BIOS of the netbooks.

In the end, I chose Buffalo DVM-P8U2 because it is cheaper and the pearl white colour matches my S10. The only downside is that it can't read/write DVD-RAM which I don't need.

ClamWin Free Antivirus 0.95.1

ClamWin Free Antivirus is portable and works from USB flash drive.

There is only on-demand scan but no on-access scan which means no real-time protection from malware. This is sufficient because I only use it to scan downloaded files. It passed all the anti-malware testfiles.

Mobile Broadband Actual Speed

The advertised download speeds of M1 and SingTel are 2Mbps and 1Mbps respectively. On the other hand, the advertised upload speeds of M1 and SingTel are 0.512Mbps and 0.384Mbps respectively.

But as shown at the same location, the actual download speeds of M1 and SingTel are 0.66Mbps and 0.52Mbps respectively. Also, the actual upload speeds of M1 and SingTel are 0.32Mbps and 0.34Mbps respectively. There is no benefit in paying more for the higher advertised speed.

Budget Wireless G Router

There is no point in getting a wireless N router if you don't need to transfer huge files between computers. Also, you won't get faster internet access with a wireless N router than a wireless G router .

I tested 2 wireless G routers - Belkin F5D7234ak4 ver 1001ak and D-Link DIR-300 ver 1.04. Both routers cost $39 with lifetime warranty.

I recommend the Belkin F5D7234ak4 because D-Link DIR-300 failed the stealth tests with ports 0 & 672 being closed not stealth whereas Belkin F5D7234ak4 passed all tests. It has all the important features and good to have features as well Wi-Fi b/g certified with WPA2.

Building One Budget Test PC with 4 OS

I've decided to build a budget test PC running 4 operating systems - Linux, Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7 RC and Windows XP Professional SP3. If you buy the right Asus motherboard, you can get Linux from Splashtop (instant-on computing). If you install Windows 7 RC, you can get Windows XP Professional SP3 from Windows XP Mode Beta. The main components are as follows:
  1. Asus M2N68-VM HDMI ($105) with support for Asus Express Gate (Splashtop) and hardware virtualization in BIOS
  2. AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5200+ Processor 2.7GHz with support for virtualization ($93)
You can get any 1GB memory, hard disk and internal DVD writer. The cost will be much higher if you choose Intel instead of AMD processor.

Prepaid Mobile Broadband

In Singapore, M1 and StarHub have already launched their prepaid mobile broadband whereas SingTel has yet to do so.

StarHub's MaxMobile Prepaid
offering is more flexible than M1. If you've a mobile broadband modem, you can get the SIM card for $12. If not, you can pay $99 for Huawei E1550 2Mbps USB stick modem or $149 for Huawei E1750 7.2Mbps USB stick modem. User can choose the download speed between 2Mbps or 7.2Mbps and activate their plan for 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days or 5 consecutive days. The prepaid SIM card can be topped anytime and the balance is valid for 6 months. A fair usage policy of 2GB (daily) is being set for all data plans. Upon reaching the limit, a SMS alert will be sent to your MaxMobile Prepaid number. I've tested the 2Mbps service with Huawei E220 modem and it works well. The setting for APN is shppd.

M1 Prepaid Broadband costs $18 for 3 consecutive days with download speed of up to 7.2Mbps. If you don't have a mobile broadband modem, you can buy a prepaid broadband kit (SIM card + USB stick) at $128. You need to top-up within 90 days. The setting for APN is prepaidbb.
